Shifting Paradigms

Call for Submissions

FUTURESCAN: 6

Hosted at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK

9-10th September 2025

We invite you to join us for meaningful conversations that will contribute to the ongoing debate about the evolving landscape of the fashion and textiles industry and education. In recent years, significant transformations have occurred within fashion and textiles education, research, and industry practices. Political shifts, the integration of  artificial intelligence, and the devaluation of creative subjects in schools have impacted the sector.

Environmental, societal, and ethical concerns, coupled with technological innovations and decolonisation efforts are reshaping design, production, and processes. Despite the emphasis on STEM subjects in schools and the funding challenges for art and design, the industry’s demand for specialised skills remains high. It is crucial to highlight diverse career paths for fashion and textile graduates and showcase the broader societal value of both creative and business-led fashion and textiles education. Collective and collaborative efforts are essential to explore new opportunities and address the challenges facing the sector today.

We invite submissions from established and early career researchers, postgraduates, practitioners, makers, designers and educators regarding completed projects or work in progress. The conference provides a forum for the dissemination of research, creative practice and pedagogy surrounding fashion and textiles. Submissions are encouraged that discuss, challenge and provoke debate in connection to one or more of the following themes Join us at Futurescan 6 to engage with experts, share insights, and contribute to shaping the future of our field.

1. Conference Themes

HERITAGE VALUES

This theme explores the relationships between historical contexts, heritage, physical settings and the skills involved in fashion and textiles. It examines how cultural, geographical and historical influences shape our understanding of provenance and craftsmanship.

We encourage papers on preserving traditional skills, the impact of heritage on contemporary practices, the role of communities in sustaining these traditions and how heritage sustains brand appeal. Submissions discussing the challenges and opportunities of curating fashion and textiles within these contexts are particularly welcome.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE

This theme delves into the intersections of technology and fashion and textiles through creative practice and business led approaches, focusing on new digital technologies, speculative futures, and the ethical considerations surrounding innovation within the sector.

It seeks to address their implications on design processes, the potential and pitfalls of emerging technologies, and the balance between failure and risk-taking in technological advancements and retail experiences. Discussions on ownership, ethics, and copyright in the digital age are crucial as we navigate the evolving landscape of fashion and textiles. Interdisciplinary approaches that consider how technology reshapes the industry and poses new ethical dilemmas are welcomed. Engage with us in examining the future trajectories and ethical challenges posed by technological integration in fashion and textiles.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PRACTICE

This theme explores the rich intersections between textiles, fashion and other disciplines within an interdisciplinary framework. It aims to bridge the gaps between these fields, highlighting collaborative practices, cross-disciplinary innovations, and the transformative potential of integrating diverse disciplines. Submissions that showcase how interdisciplinary approaches can redefine the boundaries of fashion and textiles, fostering creativity and novel methodologies are encouraged. Whether through collaborative projects, theoretical explorations, or practical case studies, this theme seeks to celebrate current and potential synergies.

RESPONSIBLE MATERIALITY

This theme focuses on the tangible aspects of fashion and textiles, including making, biomaterials, and the intrinsic value of handcraft and land-based practices. It seeks to explore innovative materials and sustainable practices that highlight the importance of biomaterials, the lifecycle of products, and the circular economy. Submissions that address the challenges and innovations in materiality, from bio-materials to artisanal craftsmanship, are encouraged.

CREATIVE FUTURES

This theme explores the evolving landscape of employability and diversity within the fashion and textiles industry. We seek contributions that redefine and reposition the roles of fashion and textile specialists: across both creative and business job functions and the rise of non-human jobs, and the value of creative fashion and textile education more broadly in today’s job market. Discussions on diversity, inclusion, and the changing employment landscape are crucial as we address the challenges and opportunities faced by professionals in the field. Submissions that provide insights into new career paths, the integration of diverse perspectives, and the future roles of designers are welcomed.
